Shortly after buying our new smaller home and preparing to move, I was up at 3am having just nursed my youngest back to sleep. I was almost back to sleep myself when my mind wandered on to thinking about the current summer, then winter, cold weather, coats, and our over-packed coat closet. Suddenly I was wide awake, heart racing, adreline pumping, in a full blown downsizing panic. We had no coat closet at the new house. In fact, when I thought about it, the ONLY closets we had were one in each of the three bedrooms. Our current 2,000sqft house had not 3, but 10 closets. Allow me to clarify further. The combined square footage of the 3 closets in our future home is 38. Just the walk-in closet in our current larger home is 34sqft and we have that sucker packed full with all clothes and no coats. Yes Hi, Welcome to our new home. Please leave your coat in your car. No linen closet, no pantry, no canning/bulk storage room, no ultity closet, no bathroom towel closet, not even the storage space under our new non-existant stairs.
In additon to closet space we went from 21 cabinets and 8 built-in drawers throughtout the old house, to just 14 cabinets and 4 drawers. I’m sure you can guess that those 14 cabinets are notibley smaller and the drawers are pretty much useless (3 of the 4 are 3inches tall which means one can hold 3 cloth napkins, try for 4 and it gets jammed).
Fast forward several weeks to unpacking boxes in the new home. My husband opens a box only to imediately yell and slam it shut. I’m thinking there’s a dead rat in the box-what else deserves that reaction? “Its a whole box of stuff for a closet that no longer exists” he says. Yup, there it was, all our coats.
We succeed in moving though! Click the link below to read how we downsized (and yes most of these were thought up at 3am…how else was I supposed to go back to sleep?!)
