India Tree Natural Food Dye Review (Pictures!)
We get our own spring water, grind our own flour, try to not over-consume sugar, and bought all lead-free USA made dinnerware. Seemed like only a matter of time before we also began to transition away from artificial dyes. That time arrived with my child’s 5th birthday. I agonized over what natural dyes to buy, not wanting to ruin her birthday cake. Of course I also cut it down to the wire and was heavily relying on Amazon Prime two-day shipping. Eventually I do hope to give picture reviews of other natural dye companies, but first here are India Tree’s Natural Food Dyes (yes on Amazon if you’re in a last minute panic, like me). 😀
I’ve used these dyes twice now for cakes, making the same shade of colors you see in the pictures. I still have 3/4 of the bottle left of each of the 3 colors they come in (Yellow, red, blue) and I keep them in the fridge. The blue color has the most liquid consistency with the red being thicker and the yellow being the thickest, almost stringy. When room temperature I shook them before using, especially the yellow one. The yellow worked fine, just instead of countable drops like the blue and red, you more so get a glob but it mixed just as easy as the other colors.
My kids were happy with the colors as pastels, so I didn’t see the need to try and go darker. If I ever do, I’ll add those picture with details on how much was used.
These colors mixed and held their hues in the frosting just fine and just as well as artificial dyes I’ve used. I have no complaints about them at all. Actually I was worried that I would be using an entire set for one cake and that is absolutely not the case. I can easily decorate many cakes with this one set of 3 colors.
What’s in them? The box label says “Colors are made from concentrated vegetable colorants. They contain no corn syrup or synthetic dyes.”
Sprinkles: India Tree also has naturally colored sprinkles. FYI: Those do have maltodextrin and soy in them.
What natural dye company would you like to see next?
